Song: St. Lawrence River (Album Version) Artist: David Usher Tab by: Kyle Doerksen Original tab by: Chris Marks (This is my own interpretation of the song based on a previous tab by Chris Marks) Cheers to Chris Marks who submitted the first version of this tab. He did the difficult work in figuring out the riff and chords...HOWEVER... THE TIMING IS WRONG I have corrected this below (and a small correction to the riff). Interestingly Mike Li submitted the second version of the tab however its EXACTLY the same as the first version by Chris except with the chords named differently...I will use Chris's chord names here... In the song David Usher alternates between the Cmaj7 chords and the Em chords TWICE AS FAST as previously tabed...{i.e. every measure is a change rather than every second measure}. The other chords in between the Cmaj7 and Em are simply "pinky" hammer-ons on the second string, 3rd fret...(Cmaj7-->C9, and Em-->Em7) If any one doubts this "NEW" timing try singing along with the intro riff... (I've added the root notes above the riff below as proof). You'll see that your actually singing the same roots as in the riff. Cmaj7 032000 C9 032030 Em 022000 Em7 022030 Am 002210 C 032010 G 320003 (320033 if you prefer) D x00232 3/4 timing...(1 2 3 1 2 3...) This song has a recurring riff that breaks the vocals. Here it is: (each character is the same length if you're reading in notepad or browser) Timing: 1 2 3|1 2 3|1 2 3|1 2 3| 1 2 3|1 2 3|1 2 3|1 2 3 (these are hammer-ons) / / / (E) C Em E|---------------0-----0--|---0-----0-----0--------| B|-----3\1--------0---0---|----0-----0-----0-------| G|------4\2-0------0-0----|-----0-----0-----0------| D|2-----0-----4-----2---0-|2-----24----45----54--0-| A|------------------------|------------------------| E|------------------------|------------------------| Timing: 1 2 3|1 2 3|1 2 3|1 2 3| 1 2 3|1 2 3|1 2 3|1 2 3 C Em E|---0-----------0-----0--|---0-----0-----0--------| B|----03\1--------0---0---|----0-----0-----0-------| G|------4\2-0------0-0----|-----0-----0-----0------| D|------0-----4-----2---0-|2-----2/4---4/5---5\4-0-| A|3-----------------------|------------------------| E|------------------------|------------------------| And now the song (this IS (really) how it sounds): Intro: riff Verse: Cmaj7 Smells in the air, C9 Em Em7 See there it's crashing the final impression that stains the paper Cmaj7 Where the words felt like water, C9 Em Unearth all the changes that never did matter, Em7 Cmaj7 riff (w/ same chords but quiet in background) I think it's beginning to freeze here after riff: Cmaj7 C9 Caught in the rage and the fire of things, Em Em7 All the brightness that burns me, I'm fumbling through like a Cmaj7 C9 Child in the dark, when the nakedness comes, Em Em7 I am shocked by the colour, the glorious way your Chorus (first word of chorus is the end of the previous sentance): Am Skin C Comes alive G D Am And I never thought we'd make it back so soon C Might be nice G D But I knew you'd be your own destroyer Am C Comes a time G D riff with chords When I always thought I'd make it up to... you Here's the song summarized with all of the lyrics. Intro: Riff Verse 1 (Cmaj7-->C9, Em-->Em7): Smells on the air, See there it's crushing the final impression that stains on the paper Where the words felt like water, Unearth all the changes that never did matter, I think it's beginning to freeze here Riff Caught in the rage and the fire of things, All the brightness that burns me, I'm fumbling through like a Child in the dark, when the nakedness comes, I am shocked by the colour, the glorious way your Chorus (Am, C, G, D) Skin Comes alive And I never thought we'd make it back so soon Might be nice But I knew you'd be your own destroyer Comes a time And I always thought I'd make it up to... you Riff (variation) Verse 2 (Cmaj7-->C9, Em-->Em7): Here please forgive me, how could we escape all the bitterness piled upon bitterness held in the face of the things that I don't understand Intellectualize, over and over this helplessness suits us, It's funny how quiet has slipped to our corners and worn all our edges Away you are watching, breathing and baiting, Wanting and warning and cautiously waiting For some simple signal, to creep 'cross our conscience, Uncover redemption and oh did I mention I Carried you down, to the St. Lawrence River, The banks running dirty, the water's beginning to freeze here, Solid by morning, And I'll freeze here, Be winter by morning Chorus 2 (Am, C, G, D): Comes alive And I never thought you'd get me back so soon Might be nice But it's only if my own destroyer Comes alive When I always knew I'd make it up to... you Riff Verse 3 (Cmaj7-->C9, Em-->Em7): I saw on your face, such a curious grin, As I let go your hand I was desparate to hold you Again, but you're sinking, so deep in the water, Out-smarted myself, and so easily gave up what I Riff Wanted, Solid by morning, What I wanted, Be winter by morning Chorus 3 (Am, C, G, D): Comes alive And I never thought you'd make it up so soon Might be nice But I always knew you're my destroyer Comes a time When I always thought I'd make it up to... you Riff Outro: Cmaj7 C9 Em Em7 Solid by morning Cmaj7 C9 And I'll freeze here... let ring Em riff 2-> E|0--0--0--0--0-----------| Be winter by morning... B|-3--3--3--3--3----------| G|--0--0--0--0--0---------| David Usher, St. Lawrence River intro tabbed by Thomas A Brannock I would agree with the chords chosen by those that have tabbed this song before me, but the intro is, sadly, wrong. After extensive listening I have determined the following to be the correct version. You should listen to the song for the timing as certain notes ring through. As a general rule, the bass notes will ring through (that's anything on the lower three strings.) The apreggio is in 8th notes, there are several slides that are are 8th note to half note ring through and the longest held note is a dotted half note. In accordance with guidelines, this is my own interpretation of this song tabbed out by ear from my own efforts and any similarity to any book or magazine is purely coincidental. That said, I am 100% sure of the accuracy of this tab (I spent a long time listening very carefully to it). Hope you enjoy, any questions or comments are welcome at [email protected]. BTW, I accidentally exported this in 4/4, but in reality it is 3/4.
